Looking to Open Things up and Generate Powerful Opportunities in Your Life? Then Look No Further than the Energy Known as Esu

This month we’ll continue our exploration of the Orisa with Esu (also known as Elegua, and Elegbara) the Orisa of opportunity and possibility. Even if many of the qualities of the Esu energy resonate with you the only certain way to know who your guardian is, would be to have your Life Path read. Each of us has a connection to every Orisa, your Guardian Orisa isn’t necessarily the one you feel most akin to. Esu is a pivotal energy in Ifa. It is this energy that opens gateways thereby allowing us to connect with the other Orisa and energies in the Universe. You may have noticed that all of the Orisa prayers begin with a request that Esu open our doors, paths and roads to allow us to connect to that other energy. In fact, each Orisa has a specific connection with the Esu energy that allows energy to flow between the Orisa and those of us here on earth. So there is an Esu for every Orisa.

Esu is associated with the earth element. While he is usually referred to as male it is important to remember that all the Orisa are balanced male and female energy. He is most often associated with crossroads, or areas in nature where many paths converge and many possibilities lay ahead. Esu opens doors, and brings potential and possibility into our lives. Esu is also a trickster energy, bringing us lessons we need to understand why clear and powerful intention is so critical before we try to manifest.

Esu teaches us that anything is possible. Our intentions are far more powerful that we could ever imagine. Of course, aligning our intentions with good character is the only way to ensure positive results. If we need to learn that lesson Esu will open door for us that may bring us powerful lessons about what we don’t want. Thus the trickster. Clarity of intention is also critical when working with the energy. You can only receive exactly what you’ve asked for so make sure you understand exactly what that is.

As the gateway to all of the other energies Esu can be found everywhere in nature. His most powerful places are where pathways and roads converge. Offerings to Esu are often placed at crossroads. His energy can be very helpful in seeing the implications of the many choices we are faced with. He can help us choose the path that will most likely lead is to our destinies.

Esu brings a sense of limitlessness to our lives. The energy can help us see that anything is possible. But can also help us recognize that possible and beneficial are not necessarily the same thing. He can also be called up on to shut down any path or road that might lead us to harm.

There are many power places for Esu. Anywhere where roads and paths converge is a great example. Busy circles in cities with many roads branching off them are a perfect place reflecting the chaos that he can help us see though. One of my favorite places to connect with Esu are clearings in the forest where many paths converge but the energy is peaceful and contemplative.

One of the things people often over emphasize with Esu are his childlike qualities. Esu is an excellent energy to work with if we need to be more relaxed, playful, and exploratory. But, there are also other aspects of Esu. The strong young warrior able to help us prepare to face the challenges and obstacles in our life. The wise old man who can help us learn to make better choices with the options he lays out in front of us. .

There are a great many things that can be offered to Esu and as with the other diverse Orisa we must always consider the intention of the offering then use something appropriate. His colors are red and black so that is also something to consider when choosing. Offerings of sweet things appeal to the young childlike aspect. Hot things like chilis or hot sauce are great to bring out the warrior aspect. For the more gentle wise old man aspects flowers like poppies, read fruit or veggies like apples, or sweet red peppers are great. I love cinnamon hearts when I need oomph and sweetness in my life. Tobacco products like cigarettes and cigars are classic offerings to Esu.

People who have chosen a specific Orisa as their guardian are referred to as children of that Orisa. While they may reflect many of the Orisa’s qualities, they don’t do it perfectly. Human beings are connected to all of the Orisa energies. Each of us has a unique balance based on those connections. That’s why you’ll find that children of any given Orisa are so different.
