Obatala Orisa of Clarity

This month we’re exploring Obatala, the Orisa of peace, calm, and clarity who is my guardian Orisa. Even if many of the Obatala qualities resonate with you the only way to know how your guardian is for sure is to have your Life Path read. If you’re interested in looking at the choices yo made before coming to the planet, including your guardian, then click here to sign up for your Life Path Discovery Session.

Obatala is also known as the Orisa of the white cloth. The energy is usually represented as male. But, as with all Orisa, he is completely balanced with both male and female aspects. Obatala’s day is Sunday. His color is white representing purity, keeping things clear. Obatala’s ability to cut through confusion and clearly see a situation makes him the judge amongst the Orisa. In nature he is the snow covered peaks of mountains where the air is cold and clear. Obatala brings perspective.

In order to find clarity we must always start with a peaceful, calm, foundation. These qualities are also closely associated with the Obatala energy. Obatala is the energy of the mind, of thinking, of rationality and the positive, and negative, aspects of the mind.

People who have chosen a specific Orisa as their guardian are referred to as children of that Orisa. While they may reflect many of the Orisa’s qualities, they don’t do it perfectly. Human beings are connected to all of the Orisa energies and each of us has a unique balance based on those connections. That is why you’ll find that children of any given Orisa are so different. One of the animals associated with Obatala is the chameleon. His children often adapt to their environment so profoundly that they may even appear to be more connected to another Orisa.

These are the qualities most often associated with those of us who have chosen Obatala as our guardian :

  • We are more cerebral than physical.
  • We love ideas.
  • We have a strong sense of justice and honor.
  • Our nerves are easily frayed.
  • We prefer small groups over large parties.
  • People seek out our opinions.
  • We prefer to be monogamous.
  • We prefer quieter music.
  • We enjoy watching the news.
  • We are always analyzing other people’s motives and behaviors.
  • We need periods of being alone.
  • We prefer to stay at home rather than travel.
  • We have difficulty with highly spiced foods (although may really like them.).
  • We have more than our share of headaches, head colds, sinus issues and eye trouble.

One would connect with Obatala to bring more peace, calm and rationality to their life. Obatala can also help us get clear on what’s really going on in a situation so that we can deal with it effectively.

With Obatala, as with many Orisa, there are offerings that re considered taboo. In Obatala’s case we would never offer something like alcohol which would cloud clarity. We also avoid hot/spicy offerings as these are not compatible with the coolness of the Obatala energy. Offerings that are appropriate for the Obatala energy are more soothing like bananas, coconut or coconut oil, shea butter. Contemplative offerings are also great, a cigar or stick of incense to spend some time in contemplation with the energy can be very powerful. When looking for something sweet I like vanilla ice cream. Get creative and come up with some ideas of your own. Just remember what the energy is about and avoid things that would be contrary to the calm, cool, nature of Obatala.

Connecting regularly with the Obatala energy will help you see things more clearly and to move through life in a more calm ordered fashion. One of the best ways to connect with the Obatala energy is through the Journey to Obatala Vision Quest that you can listen to here. This is a Spotify Link. To use another music service search for artist Oluwo Brian Olanipekun.
You can also use this prayer to reach out to the energy. I hope you’ve enjoyed this exploration of Obatala. Let me know how your connecting goes.
