Yemonja/Olokun Twin Orisa of the Sea

This month we’ll continue our exploration of the Orisa with Yemonja and Olokun, the twin Orisa of stern nurturing. Even if many of the qualities of the Yemonja/Olokun energy resonate with you the only certain way to know who your guardian is would be to have your Life Path read. If you’re interested in looking at the choices you made before coming to the planet, including your guardian Orisa, then click here to sign up for your Life Path Discovery Session.

Yemonja/Olokun are associated with the oceans, and the bounty they provide. Their energy is about nurturing. It is like the love of a good parent who understands the need for their offspring to develop and grow. Their energy is very loving and supportive, but, they expect that you will do your part to learn, grow and develop. Otherwise they can be much like a stern and angered parent providing the lessons we need to continue on our path.

Their association with the sea and its bounty also connects Yemonja/Olokun to prosperity. In Yoruba-land cowrie shells were used as currency. so, money came from the ocean in a very direct way. Their day is Monday so you would typically connect with their energy on Monday’s to build your relationship with them.

For practicality’s sake we often separate Yemonja and Olokun when discussing them. Yemonja representing the light, the warm surface waters of the ocean. Olokun associated with the depths, the dark, cold, world of the ocean floor with it’s immense pressure and strange creatures. While this distinction can be useful it is important not to separate the energies. While other traditions do this sometimes, in Ifa Yemonja and Olokun are always prayed to, connected with , and offered to, as a singular energy with two very distinct faces.

All sea creatures, plants, and even slat water itself make perfect offerings to Yemonja/Olokun.One of the most beautiful offerings you can make is returning live fish or crustaceans to the ocean while asking for blessings form Yemonja/Olokun. The rush of energy as the parents accept their children back into the sea can be very powerful.

People who have chosen a specific Orisa as their guardian are referred to as children of that Orisa. While they may reflect many of the Orisa’s qualities, they don’t do it perfectly. Human beings are connected to all of the Orisa energies. Each of us has a unique balance based on those connections. That’s why you’ll find that children of any given Orisa are so different.

These are the qualities most often associated with those who have chosen Yemonja/Olokun as their guardians :

  • They love children.
  • They have genuine caring feelings for other people.
